Sending a dollar stablecoin on a low-fee network is the fastest cheap way to move money with crypto: it settles in seconds for a fraction of a cent. The traditional route costs far more. The World Bank puts the global average cost of sending $200 at 6.49%, about $13 (Q1 2025).
What decides how fast it arrives
Speed and cost depend on the network you send on, not on the coin. The same USDC can take seconds on one network and many minutes on another. Pick the network first, then the coin.
Four networks compared
| Network | Typical fee | Time to settle | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solana | $0.0001 to $0.001 | about 12 seconds | Cheapest of the four |
| Base | $0.002 to $0.01 | about 2 seconds (soft confirm) | Fast, but moving funds back to Ethereum can take 7 days unless you pay a bridge |
| Tron | $0.20 to $3 | about 57 seconds | Common for USDT; cost depends on staked TRX |
| Ethereum | $1 to $5 | about 15 minutes | Widest support; fees spike when busy |
These are typical medians for a standard token transfer in mid-2026, per Spark.money. Network conditions change often, so check the live fee before you send.
The cost most people miss
The network fee is the small part. Turning dollars into crypto, and crypto back into spendable money, is where costs hide. Judge a transfer by what the person on the other end actually receives, after both steps.
That matters because the traditional options are not all equally bad. Banks average 14.9% for remittances, money transfer operators 4.7% and mobile operators 4.6% (World Bank, Q3 2025, via Inpay). Crypto has to beat those after the on and off ramps, not before them.
Five steps to send safely
- Confirm the network with the receiver. The same coin sent on the wrong network is usually gone for good.
- Copy the address. Never retype it.
- Send a small test first for any large amount.
- Check the fee and estimated time before you confirm.
- Keep the transaction ID until the money arrives.
Where an account app can help
Not everyone wants to manage a wallet. Account apps such as Nexo let you earn interest, borrow, trade and spend with a card from one place. You give up some self-custody for convenience, so read the terms and check that the service is available where you live.
